CFUW Haliburton’s Christmas Tree in the Haliburton Sculpture Forest
Fleming College has a very popular year round walking, snow shoeing , and cross country trail on their property in beautiful Haliburton. For the last few years, CFUW Haliburton members have decorated a tree (their tree!) in the Forest. After one of their weekly hikes in late fall, the hiking group gathers. There are 2 teams. One group that doesn’t mind a “ sticky situation “, collects lots of sappy pine cones.
The cones are rolled in peanut butter and bird seed and are knotted onto a ribbon. Group 2 , never gets messy. They print and laminate CFUW information about our Haliburton fun activities to advertise on tied ribbons for the tree.
The following week’s hike takes place at The Haliburton Sculpture Forest. Club members gather at “ our tree” with a ladder , Xmas treats , our Xmas music on a boom speaker, and of course our decorations .
It’s become a cherished tradition of great fun and laughter, and is very much a team effort! We leave the decorations on the tree until spring and always return to leave it as we found it. We now have had several members who have joined CFUW as a result of the encouraging welcoming message on the trees tags!
CFUW Perth & District Hosting Coldest Night of the Year Walk on February 24th
The Canadian Federation of University Women Perth and District is hosting a Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk in Perth on Saturday, February 24. This is a family-friendly activity that raises money for local charities serving people who experience hurt, hunger and homelessness. The Lanark County teams will be walking to raise money for Cornerstone Landing, a non-profit organization that supports youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across Lanark County. Last year, participants in the CNOY event raised over $25000 for Cornerstone Landing and this year we hope to top $30000.
On February 24 at 4:00, walkers will sign in at the Perth Legion for the two or five kilometre walk and then return to the Legion for a hot meal, drinks and snacks after the walk through town. We are asking some of our local businesses to donate food for the walkers.
