CFUW Oakville – ZOOM Speakers Series – Human Trafficking in Canada

February 21, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

CFUW Oakville is hosting James McLean at their meeting February 21 to talk about Human Trafficking.  As you may recall, CFUW St. Catharines submitted a resolution regarding Human Trafficking.  That resolution was approved at the 2021 OC AGM.  Details regarding the resolution are below.  For those interested in listening in on the presentation, please let Ontario South Regional Director Joyce See know, and she will forward the link when it is available.

February’s Guest Speaker: James McLean

Shining a Light on Human Trafficking in Canada

James McLean is the Director of Research and Policy at the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking. Within this role, he is responsible for analyzing and reporting on data collected from the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline, initiating unique research, and advocating for evidence-based, trauma-informed public policy which assists and is shared with a wide range of organizations.

Before joining the Centre, James worked with the Ottawa-based Public Policy Forum, served as Senior Advisor to Ontario’s Minister of Education, and advanced social policy with the City of Toronto and Region of Peel. James is an advocate of non-partisan and collaborative approaches to problem solving.

“Human Trafficking is a shockingly well-organized criminal activity, coordinated throughout all regions of Canada, touching all demographics and every income level” James reported in his interview with the CBC. He points out that research using survivor’s voices as real data, not police statistics only, confirms that trafficking is a gender based issue, 90% are women and girls. This will be a very informative session, dealing with difficult issues and leaving you with insights and hope.
