CFUW Aurora/Newmarket – IWD 2022 Helping Women from Afghanistan Speak

March 8 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Canadian women helping women from Afghanistan speak on International Women’s Day

This year’s 11th celebration will include panel presentation about the plight and courage of Afghan women and how Canadian women can help.  The three speakers–Fran Harding, Roya Gharji and Najiba Sanjar–have important experiences and stories to share about how they are making a difference in the lives of Afghan women.  We are so grateful to have this panel of women who will share their inspiring messages and insights so our members, and the community, may learn more how we can be advocates for change.

All are welcome to attend this virtual presentation on March 8 from 10 AM – NOON. To register, contact CFUW at cfuw.info@gmail.com.

Fran Harding is an active member of CFUW Ottawa, and for the last 10 years, she has been part of the club’s interest group, University Women Helping Afghan Women, a group that gathers to learn about life in Afghanistan, particularly the many challenges faced by women and girls.

Roya Gharji immigrated to Canada in dead of winter in 2015 – on her own with three year-old twin boys in tow — to pursue her post-graduate studies. She was fortunate to receive an international scholarship and received her Master of Communication from the University of Ottawa. Roya will speak about her experiences as new immigrant in Canada.

Najiba Sanjar is Roya’s sister and they both belong to a small minority group called Sadat in Afghanistan which has been targeted by the Taliban for many years. She left Afghanistan in September and since November has been living in Gothenburg, Sweden with her husband and five children. She will describe how her work as a human rights advocate and defender work made her a target of the Taliban and how she escaped.

As well, for the second year, CFUW A/N’s celebration of International Women’s Day also includes LUNAFEST, a virtual film festival of eight films made by women about women. CFUW A/N is partnering with the Soroptimists of York Region to host LUNAFEST.

This year’s IWD celebration no doubt will reinforce the mission of CFUW and the power of women working together for change.
