CFUW Sudbury Celebrating 70 Wonderful Years

CFUW Sudbury Celebrating 70 Wonderful Years

On December 3, 2018, CFUW Sudbury members (and guests) celebrated the club’s 70th anniversary. The club was formed in 1948 by 67 university women graduates. Sudbury at the time had no post-secondary institutions and the closest university was the University of Toronto. There was no direct road to Toronto from Sudbury (you had to drive through North Bay) and Sudbury was pretty much a mining town! A very remarkable start.

Over the seventy years, CFUW Sudbury has awarded (including endowments) over $240,000. The club also has many partnerships and in the last decade alone, the club has, directly and indirectly, made donations of over $126,000 to the community, a large part of that going to the club’s “Adopt A Family” program and also to Sudbury YWCA. Christine Tworo, Past President of the club, and the Regional Director of Ontario North gave a short history of the club. Special mention was made of two members, one who has been a member for 68 years and is the club’s oldest member, as well as a new member who is still in high school and is the club’s youngest member! Over the years, CFUW Sudbury has hosted several regional gatherings, as well as two Ontario Council AGMs and the National CFUW AGM in 1998. Two of our members went on to be National Presidents (Margaret Orange and Linda Souter) and one of our members (Eleanor Milliken) was an Ontario Council President. During the evening members and their guests participated in the annual silent auction and entertainment was provided by “Cantiamo”, a local singing group of which 2 of its members are also members of the club. Can’t wait to see what the next 70 years brings!

Christine Tworo
Past President, CFUW Sudbury
